How Energy Efficient Salt Lake City Windows Can Save You Money

By Deborah Hill

When your great aunt passed on she she left her run-down old bungalow in Magna, just west of Salt Lake City, to your mom.. Your mother merely wanted to sell it but you and your two brothers thought that maybe it could be fixed up first. When the three of you first went down to look at the place, you realized just how much potential work there was to do. Your younger brother who has experience flipping properties said that it was well worth the time and effort, otherwise another person would simply snatch it up and flip it for a tidy profit.

There were three main concerns as far as your younger brother was concerned; the roof, the flooring and the windows. The roof was fairly easy to fix through some roofers your older brother knew. The floor was a lot more work but turned out terrific. Now, a couple months in, and only thing left are the windows.

It looks like the original wooden windows were replaced in the mid-70's with aluminum ones but they were cheap replacement windows and whoever installed them did a sloppy job. Your aunt was probably losing a lot of heat in the winter and during the summer months her air conditioning was probably working at least twice as hard as it needed to. You and your brothers agree that new windows will be a great deal more energy efficient.

## Vinyl versus aluminum framed windows

While the aluminum framed windows were almost certainly an improvement over the wooden windows they replaced, in terms of seal and durability, they shed a massive amount of heat through their frames which also leads to condensation and mould issues. Fortunately modern vinyl windows don't suffer from the same heat conductivity issues and therefore any modern vinyl window will be an improvement over aluminum framed windows in that regard.

## Double strength glass

It is possible that you want to consider double strength glass. While it's more expensive, and of course heavier than single strength glass, it is not simply less susceptible to breakage but is also a better insulator in terms of both heat and noise.

## High tech low-E coatings

Sealed window units can be specially coated to better reflect IR radiation (heat). This can be engineered to either better reduce the heat gain from the sun in the summer or conversely better hold the heat from the house in the winter.

## Proper installation

Probably the single biggest factor in the energy efficiency of a replacement window is the installation. A poorly installed unit no matter how well it is engineered will lose heat if it is improperly installed. Always have your replacement windows installed by trained contractors.

If you are shopping for the best Salt Lake City windows, you can, of course, refer to the yellow pages but these days it is worth shopping online as well. Simply Google "Salt Lake City Windows" or perhaps "glass repair Salt Lake City" or even "Utah Glass Shop" and see what businesses that show up. With brand new windows the property value of your late great aunt's bungalow will increase far more than the renovation costs and will make you, your brothers and more importantly your mom a nice profit.
