Aspects Which Define Modern Furniture

By Minnie Lowery

Decorating a home is something which many people love to engage in as they can express themselves in a practical manner. A main decision one has to make is the type of theme and style to adopt. Modern furniture has evolved in the last few decades and it has become a major style in the furnishing and home decor market. Let's discuss some aspects which define this type of style.

Many claim that modern furnishings are plain and simple. In fact minimalism is a key part of such items. Designers tend to focus on practicality and the efficient use of space. As a result one will not find carvings or elaborate patterns in such items.

Straight lines feature in most of the designs, and emphasis is placed on practicality as well as the efficient use of limited spaces. Polished surfaces and metal or chrome colored accessories and additions are also common.

Most contemporary furniture is usually manufactured from moulded plywood, whereas classical items are often made from solid wood. This obviously causes the latter furnishings to be quite bulky and heavy.

Having said that, it is worth noting that this has in effect on the prices. In fact relatively speaking such furnishings are generally more affordable than classical items. However, it is also important to bear in mind that plywood is prone to chipping and scratches. Hence it is not as durable, and one may need to change them after a relatively shorter period of time.

Modern furniture styles evolved due to the emergence of mass production. The smaller rooms that are being built in most residences nowadays have also played a part in making such furnishings smaller and more compact.
