Bunk beds: Space savers

By Sean Lynch

This introductory guide will help you to find out all the information you'll need to choose the right one for your home.

A Great Alternative to Save Space. They are usually constructed by stacking one single bed on top of another. Which allows two people to sleep in the same floor space as previously only one could. Due to the bunk bed, it gives the room more space. They are used in the following situations: Hostels, shared accomodation, dorm rooms and childrens rooms.

They are Great for University Students, Kids and Small Rooms. Kids rooms are nearly always smaller than their siblings or their parents rooms, which can somethimes cause a problem when trying to fit in a wardrobe or other storage options. A useful feature of some bunk beds is that they can combine a bed and storage either under the bed or built into it. For the kids that have to share a room with their brother of sister, bunk beds create more space in the room for toys and furniture.

Apart from kids, they can be extremely useful for people starting out in college and for people who rent small apartments. For college students, creating space in a small room is hard, a bunk bed that has the bed on top and the bottom level is a desk, this is a great solution, in a way the same applies to someone renting a small room in an apartment.

Types of Bunk beds: The list below is the usual types available today:

Standard: Standard bunks are made with two bed frames stacked directly over each other. Two people can sleep in these beds.

Single Over Double: This bunk bed has a double bed on the bottom and then a single on top, it can sleep up to three people.

Loft Bed: This type of bunk bed has a bed on top with a void underneath it where you can put in a dresser or a desk.

L-Shape Bunk: Sometimes withbunk beds the bottom bunk can feel a bit tight and uncomfortable as you know their is another bed directly above you. The L shape allows both bunks some freedom and space to breath, it is good for kids who don't like to be in enclosed spaces.

Futon Bunk: A fouton is a sofa bed, it folds out into a bed for night time while being a sofa during the day.

Steel Versus Wood Construction: Bunk beds can be constructed out of steel or wood. Both types of construction have their benefits. Whether your tastes run to contemporary, provincial, colonial, or your own unique style, there are plenty of bunk bed styles to choose from.

Metal bunk beds have some benefits over wood bunks such as: The are cheaper than the wooden ones, Lightweight which means that they can be easily moved, They dont age as badly as wooden bunks do, They last the test of times very well.

The powder coat finish is anti chip and anti scratch whivh would usually happen when being moved etc. The wooden bunks are heavy and quiet hard to move at times. They can be made from oak, pine, maple etc which means that there will be a shade of wood to suit and the bedroom.

Safety Features: You must ensure that the bunk bed you are buying includes a ladder to help people get up and down from the top bunk. Railings around the top bunk is important to stop anyone from rolling out of the bed during the night. Finally make sure that all the bolts and screws are used and tightened correctly!
