Essential Accessories For A Homely Living Room

By Mark Walters

The living room is often the centerpiece of a house. It is the room in which you watch television, curl up with a good book, and entertain guests during the holidays. Here is where personal affectations are placed in order to add a cozy atmosphere to the home and remind us of what matters most to us. Because so much time is spent there, and it should provide comfort and peace to its inhabitants, it is here that can be placed items and accessories to make your living room more homely.

Cushions are wonderful objects that tie a room together as well as serve practical purposes. If your living room possesses a theme, then a few cushions that reflect this theme can be placed around the room to bring things together. They are also a place to lay your head for a nap or a comfortable accessory to place under your arm while reading a book. Cushions can make an otherwise sparse area quite comforting.

Your living room can also become quite homely with an array of paintings mounted on the walls. There are not many objects that can express your tastes and personality more effectively than paintings. Anything from still life subjects, family portraits, or whatever else makes your living room a part of the home can be placed on the walls to create the kind of statement you are looking for. Any lingering sense of isolation or blandness will quickly fade away when photographs of loved ones are scattered throughout the living room.

Lamps with darker shades also make a living room more homely. Enough light will certainly emanate from them, but the richer tones derived from the shades make for an elegance that cozies up the room. Light may also be obtained from another source, albeit one that is more suited for providing pleasing scents and ambiance; the ever-popular candle. When a candle is lit, the nerves are calmed and visions of a simpler, bygone era dance on the mind. Cushions of course do a wonderful job of making a living room homely, but throw rugs draped over the couch and chairs can really add a nice touch.

There are many items and accessories available to make your living room more homely. Whatever you choose to decorate it with, let the objects you place in the living room speak to your likes and personality. When you place accessories in the living room that are direct reflections of yourself, then your house truly becomes a home.
