Enhance Your Master Bath With DIY Custom Tiles

By Angelo Simione

While remodeling the home, kitchen wall tiles are a great choice for giving that room a lovely face lift. Thousands of styles and colors are around to choose from. Tiles are often four inches square and are avalable in different price ranges. Take the time to choose the best design that'll be attractive and also practical.

There is a wide array of tiles to choose from when searching online. You will get a better offer by simply ordering through an internet business instead of from the brick-and-mortar store. For one thing you can look at the selections at any hour without any sales guys hanging over you.

The different types of kitchen wall tiles include glass tiles. These can be clear or tinted and make a lovely glistening effect when installed. Bubble and frosted glass tiles add a unique character towards the overall design. An additional type, glazed ceramic tiles are made from clay having a baked on glaze which gives them a sparkly appearance.

Different types of clay are used to make mosaic tiles, which are colored with assorted pigments so the color runs throughout the tile. If the tile is chipped, it is tough to notice due to the continuous color. Vinyl tiles are offered also for anyone on a budget, however great care must be taken with installation so they won't peel off and bubble.

It's not unheard of for beginner diy tile installers to put in floor tiles rather than kitchen wall tiles. Tiles for a wall are usually smoother than flooring and much slicker when wet. Commonly, floor tiles tend to be thicker to resist foot traffic and furniture. Wall tiles tend to be more fragile and thinner.

The Porcelain Enamel Institute (PEI) made a scale to mirror strength and durability of a specific tile. Floor tiles usually have a PEI rating of 3 (residential floors) to 5 (industrial heavy traffic). Wall tiles are rated from 0 to 2. The PEI ranking should be published on the box or else you may get in touch with the tile manufacturer to find out that information.

Installing kitchen wall tiles isn't as difficult as you might think. Start by patching holes and cleaning the wall down. If doing a mosaic, arrange the tiles free of mortar for a desirable design. You'll be able to cut tile using a wet saw to be certain they fit. When placed at the edge of the wall, cut tiles are less noticeable.

Spread a thin layer of mortar on the wall with a notched trowel for ridges. Place a tile on the wall and gently press it in the mortar. Put spacers between the tiles and be sure the tiles are level. As soon as the mortar dries, take away the spacers and work the grout in between the tiles. After fifteen minutes use water and sponge to cleanse the tile. Stand back and admire your work!
