Ideas for Decorating Your Bedroom

By Carl Drotsky

If your bedroom still looks like it did when you first moved in a few years ago, you're not alone. Decorating a bedroom is something most people only dream about doing. While it does take time and a bit of money, you would be surprised at how quickly and easily your bedroom can take on a whole new look. If you don't feel that inspired, picture your dream vacation. Where would you go? Would the hotel room feel deep and luxurious or smooth and contemporary? Whether you would be in a coastline chalet on the Caribbean, the Paris Ritz Hotel or a tree house in the African jungle, use your dream vacation spot as inspiration for your bedroom. After all, your bedroom should feel like an escape from the stresses of life. There is no correct style in which to decorate your bedroom except your own personal taste. Here are a few ideas to get you thinking about what you like and dislike.

Let's start with the bed which should not only be comfortable but should look comfortable as well. Embellish it with a generous amount of different-sized pillows and bedcovers that are perfect for cuddling such as a down comforter. Don't be afraid to use a combination of different patterns and designs. Sometimes, when everything matches, your personal touch is lost. Venture out, and try new things. For example, a wooden headboard may be a great place to paint a mural, or perhaps you would like the look of covering it with an attractive material. The important thing for a bedroom is for it to have a soft touch, and this comes easily by paying attention to floor rugs, curtains and throw pillows which just make you want to kick back and relax.

One of the cheapest ways to redecorate your room is to change the colour. Some people revel in saturating their entire room with a favorite colour while others only want to paint an accent wall. Whichever you decide, you'll be pleasantly surprised at how different a new colour will make you feel. Actually, studies show that different colours can inspire different emotions. If you want to intensify affection, purple or red is a good choice. Orange and yellow tend to make people feel strong and lively while neutral colours can help you stay focused. Lavender, blue and green are among the most popular colours for a bedroom because they are soothing colours. If your bedroom is on the small side, try using paint that has a bit of sheen to it; the light that is then reflected off the walls will make your bedroom seem much roomier.

Another simple way to give your room a new look is by introducing new sources of light. It's absolutely incredible the way different angles and intensities of light can transform the appearance of an everyday piece of furniture. However, nothing can replace the ambience that natural light gives, so choose drawback curtains or blinds that make it easy for you to let the sunlight into your room. As for bedside lamps, matching ones will give a classic look. For a more unique look, you should try different lamp bases with identical lampshades which will bring the two together. To take your ordinary lamps into chic fashion, put a beaded tassel fringe around the bases of your lampshades. Chandeliers, as ancient as they may seem, never fail to offer the utmost romantic light in the evenings, and they come at a much better price than they did a few decades ago. Finally candlelight fixtures for your wall give the option of soft light when all you want is a glow in the room.

Don't forget to display meaningful pieces in your room that are unique to who you are. These can be pictures, keepsakes from special vacations or even an heirloom that has been passed down for generations. Whether you realize it or not, there's an artist inside of you. Find a painting or a sculpture that you are absolutely mad about to display. It doesn't matter if it's modern, classic, abstract or just strange. As long as it's something that you will enjoy seeing on a regular basis, it's a great choice. A good place to look for unique art is a local student art show. You'll be happy to know that you won't only find something unique, but you'll spend much less than you would in a gallery. Personal photos are important because they remind us of the things that really matter in life. As a final touch, piece together a photo collage of priceless memories with family and friends, and shop around for the perfect frame for it.
