If you have a home that was constructed sometime over 15 years ago, it's highly likely that you have popcorn ceilings. Popcorn ceilings are ugly, collect dirt, discolor, peel off it there's a leak, and in general are just an eyesore. Painting is one of the best ways to make your home more appealing, and it's cost effective. However, if you were to take on the task of removing the popcorn yourself, the look of your home would be incredible and the savings large. Coupled with some new paint, your home will stand atop the crowd!
If you are planning on staying in your home and want to bring it up to date, or are selling and want your home to stand out amongst the rest, then you should consider scraping off the popcorn. Most people have heard that this can be an arduous and messy task. It can be, but if you follow some easy steps, the job can be a lot easier than most people think and the mess can be contained.
Hopefully your ceiling has been painted with a flat paint so the water that you will be spraying onto it will absorb more easily than if the paint has a sheen
Here are a few steps to help you be a popcorn removal pro:
1. If you can move all your belonging out of the room or if not be prepared to cover with some painters plastic. Cover the floor with paper or plastic, making sure all overlapping pieces are taped off. Tape the wall at the ceiling with plastic and overlap the floor covering. One area at a time and the mess will be controllable.
2. Find some type of sprayer and generously wet down the ceiling. You may have to spray tough spots a couple of times. The popcorn will absorb the water, the dust will be kept to a minimal, and the process will be much easier.
3.. Using a large joint compound knife scrape away the popcorn started at the area you sprayed with water first. Try to not damage the ceiling too bad but if there are some scrapes don't worry, it happens.
4. When done scraping, immediately apply joint compound over the scratched areas and sand down when dry. You can use some fast dry mud to speed up the process.
5. The fifth step is to apply your selected texture by hand. You can rent a spray machine from your local home improvement store and spray a room in a few minutes.
6. The sixth step is to prime and paint the ceiling after the texture is fully dry. And then, of course, clean up.
Keep it clean and best of luck!
