Wallpaper has been a way for people to change the look of their home for many years now. It has been possibly the most popular wall covering for people from all around the world partly because of the numerous different styles, colours and textures which people can buy it in. A team from Accrington take their wallpapering a lot more seriously though and actually make it a competitive activity rather than just a spot of DIY.
The two lecturers from Accrington College entered into the Guinness book of records after breaking the record as the fastest two person wallpapering team. Phil Burgess and Simon Whitaker were attending the National Painting and Decorating show in Coventry in November 2011 when they took part in the wallpapering challenge to find out which two person team could hang three sheets of wallpaper in the fastest time.
The competition was organised by Beverly Whitehead who is the marketing manager at Dulux decorate centres along with Graham and Brown who are a wallpaper manufacturer. After a lengthy wait Phil and Simon were finally presented with their award stating that they were record holders and it was accompanied with some champagne so that the two of them could celebrate in style.
The competition mainly focuses on the speed of which teams can hang paper but this isn't the only criteria. Obviously with wallpaper hanging, the finish is of high importance and the competition is no different. The wallpaper has to be hung properly and is checked over before the time can be accepted and if it isn't of a high standard the time does not count. Phil and Simon had no such trouble though as their hanging was of an excellent standard.
Everybody watching was left quite in shock by the feat managed by the two college lecturers while their competitors were given a pasting so to speak. The time taken to hang all three sheets was a stunning one minute 16.435 seconds and anyone who has previously hung wallpaper will probably know how impressive that is.
