Curtains: How to Pick the Ideal Ones For Your Living Room

By Libby Williams

The living room can often be the hardest room to furnish as you spend a lot of time in there so it has to be right. It's one thing to simply put pieces together and hope they work. On the other hand you might just be lucky. But it is better to select your curtains and the design of your curtain pole in an organized and thoughtful way. The best way to approach the problem is to create a design board for your living room. Photograph existing furniture and items which are to be included in the room scheme.

Your design board should start with the wall paint colour, you can either get some paint swatches or actually paint the whole board the colour you want for the walls. Keep in mind that you may want to take your design board with you when fabric and accessory shopping. The last piece you bring to the organization process is a good understanding of the architectural style of your home. Your home maybe an old property with lots of character or it maybe modern with clean lines with minimalistic feel. If your room has any unique features then take a photo and include it on your board.

Curtains are both functional and decorative, they can offer privacy, insulation for both sound and warmth plus they can improve the acoustics of a room. Thin transparent nets, shades or other types of window treatments are often paired with the curtain to manage light control and privacy Curtain poles can also add a decorative element to your window dressing so take note of existing wood or metal finishes in the room which may influence your curtain pole choice.

Take your design board with you to any home furnishing stores you go to. Often one or more pieces on your board will provide additional color choices that already work well together. For example, if you have an existing rug or piece of art there may be colours in them which provide a good starting point which looking for curtain fabric. Pick a selection of curtain samples in those colours.

Decide whether you want your room to be modern or traditional. Modern fabrics may have large geometric or colour block patterns. If you lean more towards traditional interior styles opt for more subtle patterns. This idea follows through with your curtain pole choice. Your curtain pole style will also need to be considered.

Most fabric suppliers will be able to provide you with a selection of samples which meet your requirements. This is important, how a fabric looks in the artificial lighting of a store will be very different than how the same piece will look hanging next to your window in natural light. Try the fabrics in different places around the room to get an accurate overview of how they will look as furnishings. It will become apparent which fabrics work and which don't. Making a design board and following this process will make this process a lot easy and more enjoyable.
