Hiring Chicago Interior Designers

By Wendy Naceria

Let me be clear up front - the process I'm about to describe is not unique to Chicago. This process tends to be true in any major city in the USA. I will give recommendations for Chicago-specific professionals at the bottom though, if that is what you are looking for.

So let's get to the core of the issue right away. What do you do in order to find the right designer for you in a city like Chicago? What are the things you must take into account? Well my first advice would be to realize that word of mouth will produce the best results and has the best guarantee at success. So ask absolutely everyone you know for help, advice and recommendations.

Talk to all of your friends, co-workers and acquaintances and ask if they know anyone in the industry, or even specific designers that they can recommend. If any coworkers, friends or acquaintances mention that they have good interior design at home or at work - ask if you can see it. Many people will gladly say yes and proudly show you around their homes or offices.

When you see a few homes that you really like and resonate with, please write down the designer's name and note it on your list of designers to consider. Cross check that list against the names you keep hearing as being recommended by many people and online reviews. This should result in a good short list.

If you are new to Chicago, you will not have this big network of people to ask for advice and tours. In that case I recommend turning to the internet and review sites. There are bound to be many sites that offer good reviews. Be careful of paid reviews and fake reviews. Only go for designers who have hundreds of reviews. This is your only guarantee when you don't have word of mouth recommendations.
