By Glen Middleston

Carpentry is the second largest building trade. Training courses available for young carpenters in the USA prepare their students for entry into the trade, and advancement throughout their career. Applicants with both all around knowledge, and the most specialized skills, will be the most successful.

In 2008 there were 1.3 million carpenter jobs in the US. For the ten year 2008 - 2018 period the number is projected to increase by 13% according to the US Department of Labor. The jobs can pay well, but demand for workers and new construction will fluctuate with changing economic conditions.

Jobs in this field are becoming increasingly specialized and complex. Types range from new structure erection in residential and commercial, to repair and remodeling, to cabinet and fixture installation. Other possibilities are the building of supports for infrastructure construction and mines or constructing scaffolding for other projects. Another potential job is making forms for concrete works.

A successful job applicant will be expected to have at a minimum, basic skills in English, physics, algebra, geometry, mechanical drawing and blueprint reading. He will need some understanding of basic structural design and terminology. He will know how to organize, or lay out and plan, a project from framing to finishing.

Knowing how to operate power and hand tools and knowing their application will be expected. Knowing wood varieties, their properties and potential uses, and understanding other materials, will be an advantage when compared with other job applicants.

Besides schooling he will need to be physically fit to be able to spend his days standing, climbing, lifting, and kneeling. Work is commonly done outdoors in a wide range of weather conditions. Manual dexterity, balance, and eye to hand coordination are needed to do good work, and avoid injury while using sharp tools, working with sharp materials, at heights, or with unstable footing.

People who have the skill to build things will always be in demand. With population increases, housing needs increase as well. Repairs will be needed for existing buildings. Demand for energy efficient buildings will require new energy efficient buildings. Training courses available for young carpenters in the USA give advantages to their students in securing highly compensated positions. Those who are successfully hired, or who get promotions, or those who keep their jobs during hard times, are those well versed in general knowledge, or who have specialized training and experience that enables them to do work other can not.
