In New York? Here's How To Get An Interior Designer

By Karin Garcia

Out of all the things you can do to find an expert on a given subject, using word of mouth is the best thing you can do. New York is fortunately a very crowded place and everyone knows tons of people to recommend or refer to. If you ask enough people, you're bound to hit upon someone who has knowledge on the subject or can recommend someone with good knowledge.

The key here is that you want to give every single person you can ask. This means coworkers, friends, the person walking a dog next to your dog... You can introduce this question in any topic, no matter how "awkward" or off-topic it feels to a given conversation.

I mean, it's completely OK to introduce this as a completely off-topic subject in any random conversation, no matter how unrelated. For example let's say you are talking to a potential business partner about business opportunities in NY. In the middle of the conversation you can go "By the way, speaking of New York, would you happen to know good interior designers?"

Another thing I would recommend gathering courage for - is to ask people for free tours. When friends and acquaintances brag about having gotten good interior design, be sure to ask them if you can go tour their place and see the good work yourself. Trust me on this, if they're truly proud of their interior design they will be more than happy to let you and give you a free tour of their home or office and let you see the great work the brag about having had done. If you like anybody's place, be sure to note down the name of their designer.

Also as a final note, please note that there's one more factor. Just because a designer did a great design for another person, doesn't mean they'll do great work for you. In interior design it is also important that there is a good communication going on between you and the designer. So the designer's design skills are less important if you two don't communicate well. So be sure to test for that as well.
