Memory Foam Mattresses Compared To Others

By Mark Thomasinson

When compared to other mattresses, the memory foam mattresses are certainly a different sort than the springs you're used to. This novel approach, or design for how we sleep often puts some people off the whole idea. However, if you delve into the science and engineering behind these things, and the benefits derived, you may end up deciding to buy yourself one in a matter of weeks. If you do decide you want a memory foam mattress, don't be fooled by retailers and brands that claim their product has the quality of Tempur Pedic - do you due diligence and research your consumer product.

These statements are often not entirely true, as Tempur Pedic's quality is generally unsurpassed. This raises the question: What do we really know about memory foam and its ability to give us a good night's sleep?

One claim that memory foam brands sometimes make is that the foam reduces pressure points by conforming to the body. This is true. There just isn't any other material on the market that does this. Special cells within the foam remain open until fully compressed. When you push down on them, by either sitting or lying down, the air pressure is transferred to other cells.

The air pressure is redistributed throughout the mattress, alleviating the pressure points that you would traditionally feel from an inner spring mattress. This is how the mattress conforms to each individual body shape.

Your traditional mattress will often spring back when weight is put on it, or force is applied. This effect will cause you to lose sleep by tossing and turning all night - especially if you like to sleep on your sides. The points pressing back up on your body, caused by springs will result in blood circulation reduction. Reducing blood flow in a certain area of your body will subsequently cause your body to fire off signals to invoke you to turn over and relieve some of that blood-flow restriction.

Unlike the standard mattress, memory foam sinks down instead of pushing back against hips, shoulders, and side. The blood in these areas can maintain optimum circulation. Therefore, the body senses no need to turn so frequently. No tossing and turning means a better night's sleep, which results in that invigorated feeling upon waking.

There have been a number of customer's who have attested to this stating that they stayed in virtually the same position the entire night, even those that are side sleepers and are more prone to creating pressure points and therefore moving around the mattress more.

A benefit from memory foam mattresses is the temperature sensitivity. At higher temperatures, the material becomes softer and is more able to conform to your body. Thanks to your natural body heat, you and the mattress complement each other in working to create a wonderful, invigorating sleep.
