The Truth about painters and decorators

By Helmut Brasher

Decorating is an exciting part of home improvement, especially if you're equipped with the understanding of an expert painter and decorator. But if you have not the talent to do it, contracting a professional guarantees the absolute best finish.

One of the most significant considerations for an external house painting is safety. Stretching can be reduced with the employment of the right hardware. You would also need ladders to repaint and redecorate the high areas of your house. Aaturally, don't forget that all surfaces would need sanding. This being said, preparation is perhaps one of the most important parts of repainting and redecorating.

When preparing wooden surfaces for painting, firstly you need to sand any flaking paint and fill any holes of depressions, and remove any areas which have rotted. As they seem to be removed, the area should be handled with wood hardener or filled with wood filler. If you find knots in the wood, depending on the size, they may need to be filled. This is a procedure which could require the services of a tradesman. Primer should be applied to sanded timber, then the undercoat is applied, and finally the gloss.

If the repainting must be done on outside walls, repairs could need to be done first, using cement or mortar. When you are paiting bricks or other porous surfaces take care to prepare the surface correctly and to apply an even finish, in particular when the wall requires multiple coatings of paint.

Internal decoration would require a different preparation from the exterior, however often the preparations are similar. For example, emulsions may be required to patch a hole in the ceiling. Sanding is a very important step in the process. Sockets and switches have to be unscrewed.

For internal walls with wood coverings, the wood may need to be filled, treated and primed. Depending on your preferred finish, the most popular wood finishes include gloss or satin.

Home decoration is an easy job. But a professional finish would require nothing less than an experienced painter and decorator. It is sensible to hire a professional if your financial position can afford it. This is among the best investments you can make in your house.
