Country Gifts Give Your Room A Complete Feeling

By Allan Hatchell

Using country gifts as the decorations and accents in a room will give it a special feeling. The room creates an atmosphere where friends and family can relax. They can also provide a wonderful way to express your artistic side.

A country theme decor is one way of expressing yourself. The kitchen is often a good place to use old-fashioned hand appliances and let everyone know you take pride in your culinary creations. Adding a touch of whimsy with a rag rug makes the room cozier.

Western home accents in the living room give the feeling of family and heritage to the room. Wood and leather should be used instead of plastic and metal. While there should be plenty of colors, they should be more muted than bright and glaring. Wrought iron or brass is good choices for any metal accents needed.

Do not let the theme stop at the walls of the room; carry it down the hallways. Using brass light fixtures or wrought iron wall sconces is a good way of keeping the decor moving throughout the house. Keep the lighting soft and easy to avoid a bight contrast that changes feeling already created.

A rustic guest bedroom, with a soft feather-bed under a handmade quilt will delight anyone who has the privilege of sleeping there. An old-fashioned coat-rack gives visitors a place for their clothing and can be a special piece. If there is not separate bathroom for visitors, a wooden dressing screen offers them a bit of privacy while adding to the feel of the room.

Acquiring the pieces you need to create a country or western theme is not hard. Many rustic tables or accent pieces can be found in antique stores. You may also find pieces in regular furniture stores as well. They often have modern furniture set in an arrangement using western accents to give the set a more lived-in feeling. Another good source for pictures or decorations is secondhand stores.

If you have decided on a decor that would include country gifts, you may want to consider handmade items. If you are not very artistic that way, check with local craft shops and ask if they offer lessons or know of any groups who do handwork. You can make some new friends and find unique items you can pass down through the generations as something very special.
