Western Decor Bedrooms - Truly Authentic Or An Imposter!

By Chuck Benderfil

If your home is a log cabin or lodge, or you just want that western decor atmosphere, you'll need to create a bedroom space that's warm, cozy and inviting. Incorporating the right bedroom accessories should be your top priority. However, you'll need to figure out if you want the authentic American western look, or a more modern interpretation of that era. Whichever design you choose, you'll uncover some excellent western decor bedroom accessories to give you the feel you're after.

HOW TO CHOOSE FURNITURE

Choosing between authentic western and contemporary will probably mean you'll need to shop in different stores. For authentic western furniture, think Victorian. This style includes in the design curved wooden frames, lots of intricate wooden carvings and thick plush fabrics. Although you may find Victorian furniture reproductions in many catalogs, for truly authentic, you'll want to check out antique dealers. These antiques will cost more, but they'll certainly give your room that authentic western look. Another great look for the true American west is wrought iron. Look for iron bed frames, tables, and iron work used as a design element within the furniture itself.

On the other hand, many of us desire the western look with a contemporary touch. If by this you envision a wooden bed frame with a horse carving in the headboard, then by all means go for that. This would not be true western however but it would definitely give you that western feel none-the-less.

HOW TO CHOOSE BEDDING

After the bed comes bedding. For that old time western look, you'll want bedspreads that are knitted, crocheted, or quilted. Comforters can be gorgeous but would not be considered authentic and neither are bed skirts. Again, finding this type of bedding can be fun and rewarding. Check out your local antique shops. Have a talented family member make one. You'll also quite often find a generous selection in Amish markets in the American northeast where I live.

Even though this is true, for that modern lodge look, you'll see some absolutely gorgeous bedding sets featuring western scenery, animals, cowboys and more. You'll notice an almost endless variety of these items in most western decor catalogs. Incorporate one that adds to the rest of the room decor.

HOW TO CHOOSE WINDOW TREATMENTS

In the days of the old west curtain styles were certainly different than today. Many were made of heavy fabrics and hung with a lot of droops and tied back. This style was certainly Victorian. However, a lot of people today would probably not like this look in their bedroom. Modern styles give an open and minimal feel, allowing light to stream though the windows. For this look, you'll be able to choose from a a plethora of curtains, valances and blinds that will go with your other bedroom accessories. Use curtains with or without valances. Use valances alone. Use only wooden blinds. All of these options are good ones.

BEDROOM ACCESSORIES

The accessories you choose will ultimately bring the room decor together. Old time nic-nacs such as the ones seen in antique stores include ash trays, old clocks, oil lamps, candle holders, Victorian figurines, and similar items. Use these when your room has a more authentic look and feel. On the other hand, present-day bedroom accessories are certainly not from the American west but can be just as appealing. Some items available include western style lamps, cowboy boot planters, throws printed with western scenes, old wooden barrels, metal sculptures and wall art, and even more. With the choices available, you could really go wild!

As you can see, you have a wide variety of choices when it comes to decorating your bedroom. I hope I've given you some western decor ideas.
