How to Choose Nursery Bedding

By Mike Sherman

A lot of nursery bedding companies sell their products in sets that usually consist of a crib sheet, a comforter, and a crib bumper pad. The set may also come with a crib ruffle and additional items such as crib mobiles or diaper stackers. Be aware though that babies don't really have a use for comforters. Also, there may be some safety issues with crib bumpers. If you have no use for these extras you may want to look into crib bedding separates so you can choose what pieces you want.

You want to make sure to buy soft nursery bedding for your baby's skin. Knit cotton sheets and flannel crib sheets are both excellent choices. You want to pick sheets that are simple to wash and can go in the washing machine. After all, we know babies are really messy and you want to make doing laundry as easy as possible.

For your baby's safety, it is crucial that the crib bedding you choose fits the mattress snugly. Crib bedding is usually made to fit a large variety of mattress sizes. As a result, you may come to the realization that your crib bedding might not fit the mattress perfectly, whether it be a little too big or too small. If this is the case, consider adding elastic strips that connect to the crib sheet below the mattress to keep the sheet from sliding.

As you probably already know, raising a baby can be a huge mess so you may want to consider buying extra sets of sheets with your nursery bedding. A plastic mattress cover would also be key to help keep the mattress clean.

Having trouble deciding how much to spend on your nursery bedding? It may depend on how long you want the crib sheets to last. You may choose to spend more if you plan on keeping the sheets for a toddler bed or to save it for another child or a friend. On the other hand, if you prefer to change it up often when you're decorating your nursery, your budget can be lower.
