Reviewing Types Of High Bay Lighting

By Linwood P. Muller

High Bay lighting refers to an ample variety of lights that are at least 15 feet above the floor surface that they are illuminating and thus need to provide a powerful light. Keeping massive warehouses, airplane hangars, gyms, and other buildings well lit requires the use of these overhead lights which come in a variety of different sizes and styles depending on the needs of the facility. Fluorescent, metal halide, and LED lamps can each be installed in high bay lights in order to provide sufficient lighting. You can figure out which type of lamp your lights should be using by analyzing the needs of your facility, the cost of the different kinds of lamps, and the benefits of each one.

Since high bay lighting is so far off the floor, maintenance work can only be done with the help of tools and machinery to get workers close to the lamps. A longer lasting bulb will prevent a facility from having to switch out bulbs often and from needing to get out equipment just to access the bay light. Unfortunately, many lights turn dim after just a few months of use and may need to be replaced so often that the costs of the new bulb and the equipment needed to replace them can be quite high.

These are just some of the reasons why a growing number of companies are choosing high bay lighting with LED's lamps instead of other types of bulbs. Some of the factors that are attracting facilities to LED's are that they last substantially longer at a better light output that many other types of bulbs and they can do so while using much less electrical energy. In many cases, LED lights can be expected to last 50,000 to 70,000 of use, making them much more efficient than other bulbs.

There are some folks who do not agree with the concept of changing to LED lights because they have noticed that LED's cost more than other types of light bulbs and they do not want to deal with that cost. But the reality is that the limiting in energy use and the extended life of LED's make them a better choice financially despite the fact that their up-front purchase price is higher.

You have lots of options to consider when replacing your high bay lighting and you no doubt will have to work within your budget when purchasing new lamps. Your ideal choice, both in the life of the lamps and the amount of energy they use, are LED lights that will provide great illumination.
