The Beauty Of Reclaimed Wood Furniture

By Lucilla Cresci

In these days of cost consciousness and ecological awareness it is great to find a product which is friendly to both your wage packet and to the environment. Reclaimed wood furniture is one such product and you can use it to furnish your home in a unique and stylish way.

In past times timber was widely used for major construction, it was cheap, strong and freely available. Particularly in agriculture, its use was the norm. As farming practices have become more large scale and industrial, many old timber framed buildings have been knocked down and the materials used to make them can be reused.

In modern times soft rather than hard woods are produced. Competition from farming means that giving over space for slow growing hard timber is simply not possible and softwoods are often more suited to modern large scale needs. The strength, durability and attractiveness of traditional timbers is lacking in these modern choices however so the use of reclaimed material is often the best option.

Wood is hard-wearing and ages gracefully. Unlike some modern materials minor damage can be repaired. Sometimes knocks and scars can enhance the attractiveness of a piece by adding life and a sense of history to an otherwise inanimate object. Some timbers are noted for their grain, others for their color, still others for outstanding strength. All give vibrancy and depth to any home as the sense of a once living material will add warmth.

It is up to you if you chose to make a piece yourself, or buy an item that suits you. If you do have the skills and time to do your own work you will find a wealth of inspiration from photographs on the internet. Either way you will end up with a beautiful item that fits with your everyday life and needs.

Because every piece of timber is unique no two items made from it can ever be identical, this is true whether the piece in question is hand-made by yourself, made to order by a carpenter or bought ready made from a store or website.

There will always be a way you can utilize reclaimed wood furniture in your home, be it a modern city dwelling or a traditional country cottage. When you do this you will have gained a beautiful item which suits your individual preference, you will have a piece which should last throughout your life and which generations after you will also treasure. You will also have the satisfaction of knowing that in doing this you have extended the lifespan of a resource that would otherwise have been thrown away.
