Cleaning Chesterfield Sofas

By Lowdon Clarke

The chesterfield sofa can be considered an emotive piece of furniture. When you have purchased one, you soon start to appreciate that it is a particular product of which will stay with you wherever you go and, the sofa's versatility means it should fit into just about any home design you could have in mind.

It is extremely hardwearing and will serve a lifetime, that is certainly more than can be said for most other chairs in the marketplace. However, it's not infallible and if it isn't maintained and cleaned regularly, its stylish, impressive look could start to diminish.

We have forever had Chesterfield sofas inside our family and they never fail to become the centerpiece of the room in which they reside. This is, of course as a result of their quality and stylish appearance, but also due to an easy and uncomplicated cleaning program that we all swear by.

According to whether your Chesterfield is leather or in rarer cases velvet, there are two varying cleaning techniques to utilise. With little work, you can also continue to be proud of this lovable couch for years into the future.

FOR LEATHER CHESTERFIELD SOFAS

On a DAILY BASIS: Keep a good-sized container of distilled water in a suitable location and use the water to dampen a soft, non-abrasive cloth. After that, gently wipe down the whole sofa with the cloth, taking away dirt and hydrating the leather. (Distilled water is applied as the high chlorine content in the majority of plain tap water results in damage to leather over time)

On a WEEKLY BASIS: Using the soft brush fitting on your vacuum cleaner, vacuum between cushions and anywhere else dirt and dust is likely to collect. DO NOT vacuum with out having a brush attachment as applying the ordinary nozzle to the leather will mark and damage it.

On a MONTHLY BASIS: Use an approved leather cleaning and conditioning solution, keeping to the guidelines located on the reverse. There are several products to choose from but they all eradicate embedded dirt from the material and soften the leather, leaving it supple.

*Never use wet wipes to wipe down leather surfaces - while it may very well give you a good finish it without a doubt will greatly deteriorate the condition of the sofa.

Chlorine inside the mains water affects the leather - Use distilled water.

Use a soft brush attachment on your hoover in order to avoid dark marks on your Chesterfield Sofa

FOR VELVET CHESTERFIELD SOFAS

Velvet Chesterfields are a different kettle of fish as they draw considerably more dirt and hairs (especially when you have family pets or hirsute members of the family!). Velvets can be manufactured by using different types of materials (silk, synthetics etc.) which means that do examine manufacturer's label for specific cleaning guidelines. Nonetheless, these following actions can easily be used on pretty much all velvet sofas.

On a DAILY BASIS: Once again using a soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner, run it against the nap of the velvet (raised, fuzzy surface) eradicating any dirt from below. Use the same course of treatment beneath the cushions.

On a MONTHLY BASIS OR AS NECESSARY: Using a water-free, dry cleaning fluid, spray lightly onto any stained or dirty areas. Be certain that the fabric does not become overly wet. Apply a clean towel to the area and gently dab. You should not scrub when using the cloth because this will cause harm to the material.
