The Important Information Of Carpet

By Hayden Doherty

Carpet is the term used to describe a type of textile floor covering. It consists of a top layer of pile that is attached to backing. The pile is usually made from wool or a manmade fiber, such as: polyester, nylon or polypropylene. Usually is has twisted tufts that have been heat treated in order to help them maintain structure. There are many different types of carpets available that are installed in various rooms of properties.

Needlefelt, knotted, woven and tufted are the common types of carpets. Hooked rug and flat weave are less common styles. Usually numerous colors of yarn are applied for construction to allow for different designs and patterns.

Woven types are made on looms in a similar fashion as woven cloth. The pile of these are either berber or plush. Newer versions may combine these two styles. Needlefelt versions are made by the intermingling, as well as felting, of synthetic fibers. This kind is durable and often installed in places where there is a lot of foot traffic. Knotted pile styles include supplementary weft. Knotting that is done by hand is most popular in making of oriental rugs and carpets. With tufted types, carpets have pile injected into a backing material that is bonded to a secondary backing. Flatweave styles are made by interlocking weft and warp threads and hooked rug is a simple handmade rug.

Fibers and yarns used in production may be natural or synthetic. Common materials employed: acrylic, nylon, polypropylene, wool blends, wool and polyester. Fibers are chosen based on ease in manufacture, cost, durability and appearance. In terms of production, polypropylene and nylon are the most popular yarns used, accounting for nearly 90 percent of the market.

Nylon, both nylon 6-6 and nylon 6, are commonly used in the manufacture of these pieces. This material can be topically dyed or through solution dye. It is easily to be printed and wears well. However, this is known to easily stain because it includes dye sites on the fiber. Those sites must be filled in order to give the carpet any type of resistance to stains. Because this material is petroleum-dependent, it will fluctuate in price based on the cost of oil.

The low price of polypropylene makes it a popular choice. It does not do well with wear and is difficult to dye. Wool is known for being particularly durable, especially when blended with synthetic materials. Modern carpets may be made from blended wool yarns that have a makeup of 20 percent synthetic fiber and 80 percent wool.

Polyester can be used for the making of both filament and spun styles. Overall, this material has good physical properties. It does not have dye sites and is stain resistant. However, it a downside is that it tends to mat or crush down very easily. Acrylic is hard to dye, but has a wool-like appearance and feel.

Carpet is the term given to a kind of flooring that is installed in many buildings. It is produced in varying styles, materials, colors and patterns. Many people look for durable, good looking and feeling, and stain-resistant carpets.
