Buying The Right Steel Pocket Door

By Cathy Mercer

In the past a steel pocket door or any kind of pocket door was used to separate two rooms. It was a good idea to have a room that could be used as a large room but was really two rooms in one. When the homeowner wanted to close off one of them they could just slide the door closed. But when they wanted the rooms to combine the doors would slide into the wall giving the appearance that they were never there.

The installation of these doors can be tricky if you don't know what you are doing or if you have not done this before. The first thing you must make sure of is that you have the proper tools for the job. This is not just an installation of a regular door. This is going to be put inside the wall on both sides of the entryway so it must be done the right way.

If it is not, you could be looking at a possible structural problem and that is something that can follow the home all the way to the sale years down the road. If you are not positively sure that you can do the job, you must step aside and let a professional take over. This is no time to let pride get in the way.

Sometimes the entire wall must be torn out and replaced just to install such a doorway and this is not what a homeowner will want to do. It can be very costly as well because not only will the material be expensive but taking a very long time will cost a lot in labor. You want to make sure you have professionals doing the work as well.

You must also make sure that you get the right tracks and rollers as well. They must be sturdy enough to support the weight of the doors and also be able to provide a quiet operation. The last thing anybody wants is to hear the doors every time they slide. You will want quiet operation of the doors.

Most construction companies and handymen can install these for you if you do not already have them in your home. Some of the newer homes already have these types of doors but the steel ones are a bit uncommon. You will usually find these in the business arena a bit more than in homes. A business likes the pocket doors for their style and the fact that they vanish leaving more available space.

Local hardware stores or home builder stores will sell the materials and products that you need and they will also sometimes even be able to contract a crew out to do the installation too. That is, unless you will want to try and do this by yourself. It is possible to do but can be very difficult if you have never done things like this before.

This is how they were thought of early on and eventually they evolved into just using them as doors as opposed to closing off or opening up a larger room. Steel pocket door is much sturdier and was used in a business environment and would only sometimes be used in home. Wood was normally used but s time went on and designs changed people were inclined to use either one.
