How To Take Care Of Teak Garden Furniture

By Ronald Green

Teak patio furniture is the most superior quality backyard furniture imaginable. Teak outdoor furniture is also quite simple to maintain. Teak has unique qualities which make teak furniture ideal for using outdoors. Teak outdoor furniture takes just a small amount maintenance to look good for many years.

Teak is one of the most expensive woods. Nevertheless, you can come to the conclusion that teak furniture is a solid investment owing to its longevity.

You should clean your teak outdoor furniture on occasion in order to prevent any buildup of dust or dirt. You can spray with a garden hose on a low pressure setting to wash the dirt away. Then, using a soft brush, wash the surface of the wood not too roughly with a blend of water, dishwashing liquid, and a couple spoonfuls of bleach. Using too much bleach will lighten the wood so using bleach is up to your judgement. Once done, rinse again with pure water.

Teak furniture that remains outdoors will naturally begin to gradually fade color from the golden honey color of fresh wood to be a gray patina. This process of teak furniture becoming gray patina is normal and purely cosmetic. It does not reduce the stability of your patio furniture.

Some people like the golden honey coloring of new teak outdoor furniture and buy teak oil as a method to maintain this color. But teak oil is bad because it must be used every three or four once you begin applying it. Teak oil could also increase the likelihood for mildew to appear. A better idea is to use teak sealer once a year after cleaning your teak outdoor furniture to try to maintain the golden coloring.

You may select to employ a furniture cover for your teak outdoor furniture, in particular in the winter season or if your house is in an area that gets a lot of dust. If you choose to use covers, be sure to purchase furniture covers made from a breathable material. Do not get a cover made from plastic that would trap humidity. It would raise the possibility of mold growing on the surface of the wood.

Dark stains including coffee or red wine can be removed by a light sanding of the outer most layer of the teak outdoor furniture. Begin with a medium grade sandpaper and then finish off with a fine grade to get a smooth outer finish. Sanding like this is another method to bring out the golden honey tone of teak wood since you are exposing a new layer of wood that is still saturated with the oil of the wood.

No matter if your furniture is a teak rocking chair or a a teak outdoor dining set, a little care will go a long way.

As you can see, your teak furniture is going to last a lifetime with very little care for you to do. Because it lasts such a long time, teakwood is better than other types of wood. You will rest in knowing that the teak furniture set you get now can be enjoyed by your family in future generations.
