How Fireplace Covers Can Enhance Safety Of Fireplaces

By Leslie Ball

For many centuries, fireplaces have offered the families that comfort and warmth they need during those times when the weather gets chilly and extremely cold. Fireplaces have today turned to be focal points of homes because of the kind of accessories that have been introduced in these areas including use of decorative parts to make the fireplaces look attractive and beautiful. Use of fireplace covers is not something new since they have been in place for many years.

Nowadays, fireplaces have been designed in a modern setting environment. They are not only used for warming up the home but also creating a visual appeal. To achieve this goal, the fires are often decked out with use of decorative parts such as the mantles in order to make the focal point of the house.

The fireplace is today pampered with different accessories all in the name of making it look appealing to the eye. People will find it very fulfilling and satisfying to congregate around fireplaces in the evenings and enjoy the heat while also discussing aspects of the day activities. It is important to note that much of the safety aspects of fireplaces have been pinned on chimneys.

People talk about the creosote, cracked flues, and deteriorating mortars are possible causes of fires in houses. This perhaps may be true but there is still a subject that presents safety issues in homes that might not have been much emphasized. This is the open fires that burn in the fireplaces.

Uncovered fireplaces have the risk of causing fires and damage property at home. The fireplaces may release sparks and embers that could fly inside the house and land on clothes thus damaging them or triggering a fire. Similarly, the wood logs may tumble down and damage the wooden floors, carpets, or even cause burns to someone standing next to the fireplace.

When burning wood tumbles down, it presents dangers to the tiles and wooden floors. It may destroy the tiles, the wood floors, carpets, or even roll to someone sitting or standing next to the fires. When the fires are open, the sparks and cinders will fly and float freely in the house and they could land on clothes, home furnishings, and furniture.

The embers or sparks could trigger fires and cause damage to the home. Safety issues in fireplaces have much been centered on the chimneys, which are said to trigger fires every year, causing a trail of damages in property and lives lost. Chimney fires have been the center of discussion in topics concerning the safety of fireplaces in homes.

However, despite the focus on chimney fires, there are other risks that may be presented by having open fires. The sparks released from the woods in open fires could spread or fly inside a house and land on clothes, curtains, furniture, and others things thus causing damage on them. In addition to the safety benefits presented by use of fireplace doors or screen, there is also the aspect of energy efficiency.
