Information About Bathtub Refinishing West Palm Beach Residents Should Know

By Leslie Ball

Typically subjected to many years of use, bathtubs eventually begin to show signs of aging such as dullness, rust marks, scratches, and pits. In older homes, tubs may be colors that are no longer popular and need a more modern look. The easiest way to quickly make any tub look like new, is to refinish it. If they are thinking of bathtub refinishing West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale, FL residents should find this guide to be informative.

Replacement of an entire bathtub unit is an extensive feat which can be costly and time-consuming for the homeowner. In most cases, complete replacement isn't even necessary, and if the main concern is improving the appearance of the tub, this can be accomplished quite cost-effectively by simply replacing the old finish with a new one.

It usually only takes a skilled tub reglazer one day or so to complete this job, and after standing for two to four more days, the tub will be ready to be used again. This type of work is generally not recommended as a do-it-yourself project as it involves such tasks which call for the know-how of a professional.

Although the products and process used, may differ from one company or contractor to the next, refinishing a tub generally consists of several standard steps. Preparing the site as to minimize mess and hazards is the first step, this involves covering all areas of the bathroom except the bathtub with heavy plastic sheeting which is taped down, and setting up a ventilation system to direct dust and fumes outside and away from the other rooms.

In order to refinish a bathtub, the existing glazing will need to be removed using a stripping agent, and then sanded down. Before the new finish is applied, it will be necessary to repair any irregularities in the substrate of the tub such as chips and cracks with a polyester putty. Then a substance called "etching" will be applied to improve the porosity of the surface, followed by silane, an "adhesion promoting bonding agent".

Then a primer is applied and allowed to dry to ready the surface for the new glazing. Finishes used on bathtubs can be made from polymers, epoxies, or urethanes, and for best results, they are sprayed on layer by layer, allowing for full drying after each application. Finally, a sealing top coat will be added, and in several days' time, the tub can be used.

Poor workmanship can lead to numerous problems with the refinishing job. Examples of this include a rough finish, air bubbles on the surface, stickiness, or fading. These issues result due to incomplete sanding or cleaning, not allowing each coat of finish to dry, and incorrect use of refinishing agents. If done properly however, the new finish should look flawless.

It is the customer's responsibility to ensure that the person or company they hire to refinish their bathtub possesses the skill needed to do a quality job. It's a good idea to compare several contractors and obtain a written estimate from each of them. During the hiring process, one should be sure to ask for references, verify insurance coverage, and inquire about the company's background check policies on workers if applicable.
