Benefits Of Having A Basement Remodeling York PA

By Roger Gorman

For some reason, we Americans aren't that good about using our basements. They represent almost an entire extra floor of possibilities and what do we do with them, store stuff. Stuff we never use but could bring ourselves to get rid of.

While it's perfect if you have windows along the ceiling of the cellar, you can still create a spacious, light ambiance with lighting, mirrors and the colors in the room's decor. Take it a step further and put in an open staircase to replace the existing set of stairs.

A remodeled basement room doesn't have to look gloomy. While it is fortunate when you have windows in the basement, it is surprising what can be done with clever lighting and decor. Carefully placed recessed spotlights and pale colors for the ceiling and at least three of the walls can give the illusion of light and space. Taking out the exiting staircase and putting in a set of open stairs will really open up the space.

The thing about the bottom floor of a house is that it's off the beaten track in a home. It's okay if it doesn't blend in with the rest of the house. You can be as bold and adventurous with the decor as you want to be. If you kit it out for a specific purpose and it doesn't work, try something else.

Your basement can be converted to a game room, a great place for the kids to burn off energy when they're off school or the weather is too rough for playing outdoors. Bring in a ping-pong table, a dart board, table football and sturdy, second-hand furniture will keep them quiet for hours.

Another use for a remodeled basement is a male sanctuary, or man cave. This is someplace for him to go and "be himself" without worrying about offending feminine sensibilities. You can learn a lot about a guy by observing how he outfits his personal space.

Happy Hour. The basement is a great place to install a wet bar and a music station for parties, informal gatherings or hanging out on a rainy day. Cellar temperatures (54-59F) are perfect for brewing beer, especially British-style real ale.

Whether you are using your "new" space to run a business, keep the kids quiet, or as a place for the man of the house to hide away, add a sofa bed and you have a new spare room for overnight guests. Think ahead and install an en-suite bathroom and small kitchenette and it's a place for mom and dad to spend their golden years.

By remodeling your basement, you not only gain an extra room for a lot less expense than building an addition to the house, you are also adding value to your house should you decide to sell it at a later date. Hate the idea of losing all that storage space? Take your stored belongings out of their boxes and incorporate them into the design of the new room. Put your collectibles on display and your books on shelves, where people can see and actually read them.
