How to Decorate Your Home On The Cheap

By Luis Mendez

Back in the day the only thing a homeowner had to do to get his or her home decorated was call the family decorator and hire them. This is still something that some people do. For most of us though, home decorating is seen as more of a luxury than a "have to" activity. Give it some thought: how many of your friends live in houses or apartments that aren't decorated because they think that decorating is too expensive? It is quite possible to decorate an entire home without ignoring your budget! If you would like to learn some of the ways you can decorate your home in your spare time without spending all of your hard earned cash, read on!

You definitely want to visit a thrift store. Saving money is the name of the game at thrift stores and second hand stores-especially for people with big projects like home decoration. There are lots of decorative items on thrift store shelves, you just need to learn how to be creative with what you find on the shelves. It is easy to make a thrift store purchase into a brand new decorative item for your home as long as you are willing to be creative. Even the loud patterned clothing can be taken apart so that the fabric can be used for other things. The best deals can be found in neighborhoods where the residents are wealthy.

Get used to surfing the internet. Artists like sculptors, photographers and others are always selling their work through the internet. One place that is great for finding great art and decorative items is etsy. Many artists upload their work for free to community sites like Flickr where you can look through their portfolios for free. Many home decorators find great stuff through artists' personal websites. Thankfully you are no longer limited to finding home decorating items through sites like Amazon and Ebay.

You probably have a lot of knick knacks and dust catchers and other decorative gifts that people have given you. Almost everyone has at least a few things squirreled away in their homes that they only bring out when the person who gave them to us visits our homes. Have you thought about just leaving them out? Even if they don't gel perfectly with your decorating scheme you can use them while you work to put together things of your own. Keeping the items on display will save you a lot of stress because this way you won't have to worry about anything if the person who gave you that crazy statue shows up for an impromptu get together.

Store bought art is fine, but sometimes the decorations you make yourself are even better! Take your time and think about what you really want. The faster you try to finish your decorating project the more likely you are to deplete your savings.
