Restaurant decor ideas

By Sarah Goare

How to decorate your new premises should be one of the first things you think of if you are opening a new restaurant. It can, however, be very difficult to pluck a theme or a decor idea out of thin air, which is why you may need some ideas and a few tips on planning restaurant decor.

The surrounding area of the restaurant could be a good starting point when it comes to thinking up a good theme for your restaurant decor. The theme for the decor and possibly even the name of your business could be based on a particular feature of the area, be it natural or man-made.

If there is something that the city or the neighbourhood is particularly known for, this could give you some ideas for your restaurant decor. An example of this is the city of New Orleans, which is known for its jazz. If your restaurant was based there, you could make jazz part of your theme.

Do you have a favourite decade? If so, this could be the theme for your restaurant decor. For example, you could design your restaurant with the nightclub glamour of the 1920s or the retro feel of the 1950s and its red leather dining chairs.

Another popular restaurant decor theme is French bistro. You can really go to town with this theme, putting down chequered floors, putting up French decor and adding a vintage bistro chalkboard. However, unless you plan to serve food that is at least inspired by French cuisine, this theme may be confusing for your customers.

Above all, you should think about your customers and their needs and tastes when planning the dcor for your restaurant. If it will be frequented by couples, you may want to make the decor intimate and romantic. Similarly, family friendly establishments may want to be bright, colourful and open in their layout, whilst restaurants which cater to business people and city workers would suit a modern, minimalist theme.
