How to Have Some Fun Decorating Your Room!

By Norita Sieffert

It is finally time. Possibly you enjoy redecorating. Or perhaps you really dislike it. It doesn't have to be a chore however. Redecorating can be enjoyable. Get started by dreaming big! If you are looking over a room you've used for a long time and you're ready to change it, then go right ahead and see it exactly as you would hope to have it when you're finished. Don't get cut-rate in your mind just yet. Go for it and visualize it with every single article you would like to have.

Since you're dreaming big, think about the ceiling and continue your way down to the floor. Mull over painting the ceiling or perhaps adding some special accents. People tend to disregard the ceiling, but it can be a real eye-catcher if it's done well. Next, it's time to take a look at the walls. You can repaint or maybe add wallpaper or consider some paneling. Also picture how wainscoting or a chair rail would look. If you have an artist's eye you could add your own touches also.

The color you decide on is highly important. First you should consider the feeling you wish to communicate in this space. Blues are peaceful and appealing, but a very light blue can come across as cold. Reds are dazzling and lively, but can be threatening and incite rage. Yellows are bright and cheerful, but an overwhelming amount of yellow can actually make people feel edgy. Oranges are a happy medium between red and yellow and are lively and happy. Purples remind people of sophistication. Greens are calm and soothing.

Now you are ready to tackle the floor. You have many options here, such as carpeting, vinyl, linoleum, wood or paint. You'll want a choice that will go well with your wall color. Take into account the kind of traffic the room will encounter. If people are going to tramp through from outdoors then carpet might not be suitable. Evaluate also how you plan to use the room as you settle on the best flooring.

Now you are ready to consider the furniture and accessories for your room. If this is a bedroom then dream big and choose the type of bed you'd like to have. You can have anything from poster beds to sleigh beds, platform beds, etc... Kids really enjoy bunk beds. Also you can browse the Internet or review catalogs and pick out the comforter set that will really make the room stand out. You can reuse an existing comforter inside a new duvet cover that will change the look without sucking your wallet dry. Or you can go the whole way and purchase a new down comforter set. Harmonize the remaining furniture in the room to the bed since it's the centerpiece. Nothing is stopping you at this point. Imagine the whole thing as you want it to look.

If this is a living room or den then continue dreaming and visualize the type of furniture you would love to use. The furniture can be plain or overstuffed. You can choose leather or suede or even cloth. You can pick out your color based on your walls and floors. You can pack the room with furniture or leave room to breathe. Do you want to add photos or art to the walls? What type of curtains, blinds or shades do you envision for the windows? Should you include some decorative touches like pillar candle arrangements or collectibles? Do you like decorative pillows and throw rugs?

Now that you have in your mind everything you want, it is time to get sensible. You may have to whittle down your list and remove a few of the items that you either can't find or can't afford at the moment. But consider each item before you cross it out. How does it leave you feeling? If it makes you feel very happy, then maybe you should retain this item on the list. If you don't feel much of anything then remove it. When you're finished you'll have a manageable list.

The final part is the actual labor. But this doesn't have to be a chore. Start by planning time complete the project and eliminate as many interruptions as possible. Gather all the supplies ahead of time and rearrange all your plans so that you can concentrate on getting this done. Also, invite friends to assist you and turn it into a party. Offer to cater lunch while you're working, and organize a celebration and show off the completed project. Remember to take before and after photos and stick them around the space so everyone can see what's changed. As someone once said, the satisfaction of a job well done is its own reward!
