Swedish Antiques And Their Functionality

By Nita McKinney

People are, more and more, embracing the beauty of pieces of furniture that were created in the past, better known as antiques. Unfortunately, many of them are not necessarily functional in modern times, or they are too fancy or ornate to accommodate the modern family. Enter Swedish antiques and people get the best of both worlds.

The Nordic people have always been simple, and furniture designers always designed with simplicity. They're straight lines were evident from way back, and continue to be so even today. That's what makes this furniture so interesting, because it easily works well with other modern pieces.

These were very innovative people who designed according to their needs. They took function and understood it in every way, rather than focusing on intricate detailing. This is not to say that their work was not top-of-the-line, because it is. However, when comparing these designs to others of similar times with French or Italian designers, the difference is very evident. Space-saving solutions were always key to the designers thought of the future even though they designed for the present.

All that aside, one can get these great finds, either in abundance and decorate their entire home in this way, or just pick one or two pieces. The truth is that these older pieces that are imported can get quite pricey, and some may not be willing to pay such amounts for them. What's great about this is that they can opt for even decorative accessories, which will still bring them beauty and that connection they yearn for.

The fact is that they're simple lines just allow them to work with other antiques from other parts of the world or even present-day furnishings. This can give him the opportunity to have more eclectic designs themes through mixing and matching. As most people already know this, Swedish furnishings almost always had the natural tone, but these can be easily changed.

All it takes is some sanding, staining, or a fresh coat of paint and the look can be brand-new. Having said that, there is no insinuation here to refinish or restore very valuable pieces. Such pieces should be left up to craftsmen who have the experience to restore them, thus maintaining their value.

However, for the more common pieces that need some touching up, this is a great solution and pretty much anyone can tackle the challenge. It's a great way to breathe new life into an otherwise tired piece. For most who appreciate this look, it would be best to restore them to their original beauty, but the choice is up to the individual. One thing that's for sure is that one needn't waste money on poorly constructed and designed pieces when there is great quality out there.

It easy to warm up your home with Swedish antiques, and still have valuable furniture that can work in modern times. Many pieces can be afforded by most consumers, so it's a nice change when compared to furniture from other European countries. Regardless of that, it will maintain its value and become an investment rather than an expense.
